Rusty Spotted Cat

Rusty spotted cat ( road kill ) , Visakhapatnam Rusty spotted cat is the smallest of all cat species . It is endemic to India and SriLanka. IT can easily be identified by rusty brown spots on its body. They are mostly seen in night time. They mostly feed on rodents but also prefer small reptiles and birds They prefer dry,deciduous and stony terrains . Due to habitat loss and illegal poaching the population of Rusty spotted cat is declining. Estimated population is less than 10,000 individuals . The name " flap shell " comes from the presence of femoral flaps locate down the plastron.These flaps of skin cover the limbs when they retract into shell. It is the most common aquatic turtle species in India . It is omnivorous in diet and likes to feed on snails, shrimp, frogs, fishes, flowers, fruits, etc. On a darker sight, it shell is known to have medical values and are often smuggled for the shell, which will be burnt and mixed with oil for a Chinese medicine IUCN Status - Least concerned .
